Factors Causing Anemia in Adolescent Women: Literature Review

Abstract

Introduction: Anemia is a condition of the body where the hemoglobin (Hb) level in the blood is less than normal, in young women it is said to be anemia if the Hb content is <12 gram/dl. According to WHO, the incidence of anemia in young women in South India as a whol e is 67.9%, where moderate anemia is 37.05%, mild anemia is 21.42% and severe anemia is 9.4%. Research in Sri Lanka 31.65%, Nepal 68.8%, Myanmar 26%, Maldives 57%, Bangladesh 98%. The highest incidence of anemia occurs in Bangladesh 98%, Nepal 68.8% and South India 67.9 %. Riskesdas 2018, the incidence of anemia in Indonesia is 32%, meaning that 3 to 4 out of 10 adolescents suffer from anemia. Objective: This study aims to identify the factors that cause anemia in young girls. Method: This study uses Literature Review with Pubmed and Google Scholar as the search database. The data taken are research articles from 2018-2022, with the keywords adolescent anemia", "Factor anemia adolescents", "Risk factor for anemia", "Factors of anemia in adolescent s", "Adolescent anemia risk factors". Result: The results of the study found supporting factors that influence the occurrence of anemia in young women, namely: level of knowledge of adolescents (p-value = 0.000, then p <0.05), body mass index (BMI) (p value = 0.000, then p <0.05) and the menstrual cycle (p = 0.003 <0.05) has a significant relationship with the occurrence of anemia in young women. Conclusion: Factors that influence the incidence of anemia are level of knowledge, BMI (fat and thin), menstrual cycle (menstrual cycle l ength, menstrual blood volume).
