The Effect of Caffeine Drink Consumption on Patterns and Sleeping Quality of College Students

Abstract

Caffeine belongs to the methylxanthine family, which is found in many foods, beverages, medicines, and supplements. Caffeine is naturally found mainly in coffee plants, cocoa fruit, and tea leaves. In addition, in carbonated drinks and energy-boosting supplements, caffeine is also found. Caffeine is also classified as the most widely used psychoactive substance in the world and has a stimulant effect. The influence of lifestyle makes the consumption of caffeinated products, especially coffee and energy drinks, including among students. Caffeine in low doses can have a positive effect. But not all products contain caffeine levels, so you need to be aware of the side risks that can occur. Coffee consumption is also a trend among young people, students, and Indonesian students to increase energy, reduce, and reduce sleepiness. The effect of reducing sleep time and quality can occur when caffeine is consumed before bed. Objective: To determine the effect of consumption of caffeinated beverages on the sleep patterns and quality of students. Method: Systematic literature review by searching for articles. Article searches are carried out with databases such as Google Scholar. The keywords were "caffeine", "sleep patterns", "sleep quality", "students" and the author found 7 relevant articles from 2009-2019. Result: There is an effect of consumption of caffeinated drinks on the sleep patterns and quality of students. Conclusion: it has been shown to affect sleep patterns and quality, especially if excessive, side effects will be headaches, tremors, restlessness, sleep disturbances, insomnia, excessive exaggeration, fatigue/lethargy, lack of enthusiasm, and vomiting, and vomiti ng. Suggestion: It is recommended to the public, especially students, to reduce excessive caffeine consumption because it has been proven to reduce sleep patterns and quality.
