Effectiveness of Lemon Aromatherapy Against Nausea & Vomiting in the First Trimester of Pregnancy: Literature Review

Abstract

Introduction: Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (morning sickness) is experienced by around 70-80% of women during pregnancy, mostly occurring during 5-12 weeks of pregnancy. Nausea and vomiting during pregnancy if this condition is not treated immediately can cause hyperemesis gravidarum which is said to occur in approximately 0.05-2% of all pregnancies. Objective: This study aims to examine in more depth the effectiveness of lemon aromatherapy on the effect of aromatherapy on nausea and vomiting (emesis gravidarum) Objective: This research aims to examine in more depth the effectiveness of lemon aromatherapy on the effect of aromatherapy on nausea and vomiting (emesis gravidarum). Method: This review uses several sources including systematic search studies of computerized databases (Pubmed and Google Scholar) taken in the last 5 years from 2017-2021. The criteria for finding the key to searching the literature review were "nausea and vomiting", "lemon aromatherapy", "pregnant women", and "emesis gravidarum". Result: Nausea and vomiting are almost inevitable characteristic complaints of pregnancy, with an estimated prevalence of 35% to 91% in pregnant women. There are tremendous physical and psychological effects on women who experience these symptoms, along with significant constraints on the pregnant woman's lifestyle, which has a serious impact on the quality of life for the family, as well as the ability to carry out daily activities, social functioning and stress levels pregnant mother. Conclusion: After examining the literature review of 4 relevant scientific publications, namely regarding the effect of giving lemon aromatherapy on nausea and vomiting in first trimester pregnant women, it was found that there was an effect of lemon aromatherapy intervention on nausea and vomiting in first trimester pregnant women.
