Effectiveness of Giving Moringa Leaves to Increase Hemoglobin Levels in Pregnant Women with Anemia: Literature Review

Abstract

Introduction: Pregnancy-related anemia has been a significant public health issue in Indonesia throughout the last decade. When there are not enough red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood, this condition is known as anemia. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines normal hemoglobin (Hb) limit levels for pregnant women as >11 gr/dl, mild anemia as Hb 10.0-10.9 gr/dl, moderate anemia as Hb 7.0-9.9 gr/dl, and severe anemia as Hb 7. 0 gr/dl. Moringa leaves are a non-pharmaceutical option for raising hemoglobin levels in anemic pregnant women (1). Objective:: To examine more deeply the effect of giving Moringa leaves on increasing hemoglobin levels in pregnant women with anemia which is in agreement with previous studies by reviewing several studies. Method: The author uses several sources including systematic search studies of computerized databases (Pubmed and Google Scholar) taken in the last 5 years from 2018-2022. Result: The articles obtained in the search were 50 journals, but after reviewing the articles and adjusting the titles, there were 14 journals with 5 international and 9 national. Conclusion: The conclusion obtained is that after examining the literature on 14 relevant scientific publications about the effect of Moringa leaves on increasing hemoglobin levels in pregnant women, it was found that there was an effect of giving Moringa leaves on increasing hemoglobin levels in pregnant women.
