The Relationship between Sports Activities and Menstrual Pain (Dysmenorrhoea) in Young Women: Literature Review

Abstract

Introduction: Sports activities have been proven to be effective in reducing menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) in young women. The lack of knowledge among young women about how to deal with menstrual pain (dysmeorrhea) means that young women's encouragement to do sports activities is also reduced. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the incidence of dysmenorrhoea is very high throughout the world. The average frequency of dysmenorrhea in young women ranges between 16.8 and 81%. The incidence of dysmenorrhea in Indonesia is 54.89%, which is primary dysmenorrhea. The incidence of dysmenorrhea in Indonesia is 64.25%, including primary dysmenorrhea 54.89% and secondary dysmenorrhea 9.36%. Based on data from the Central Java Provincial Health Service, in 2022 the number of adolescent girls aged 10-14 years will be 63,968. In Semarang City, there are 87.8% who experience dysmenorrhoea and still carry out activities as usual and 12.2% use pain relievers. Objective: Analyze the results of research over the last ten years regarding the relationship between the level of knowledge of sports activities and menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea). Method: The method used in this research is the literature review method where the researcher critically examines the ideas contained in several studies. Search literature review. The search method was carried out using PICO analysis, namely young women, the intervention was the level of knowledge that young women had regarding sports activities between those who had sufficient knowledge and those who did not, the results were related to the motivation of young women in carrying out sports activities. This article was searched for in a number of scientific databases such as ScienceDirect, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Results: From the analysis of 10 articles in 6 international journals and 4 national journals, there was a relationship between the level of knowledge of exercise routines and menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) in young women. Result: From the analysis of 10 articles in 6 international journals and 4 national journals, there is a relationship between the level of sports activity and menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea) in young women. Conclusion: The level of knowledge has a big influence in generating motivation to do sports. The higher the level of knowledge, the higher the motivation regarding the importance of exercising to reduce menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea).
